SHOOT! 2008: FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, PLATEAU STATE ASSURE SUPPORT FOR FILM DEVELOPMENT

The Federal government has renewed her assurances and readiness to continue to support initiatives that aims at developing the Nigerian motion picture industry.

This was disclosed on Monday July 21, 2008 by Mr. John Odey, Honourable Minister of Information and Communications in his speech to declare open the fourth edition of the Nigerian Film Corporation Annual Professional Training Workshop SHOOT! 2008, and the commissioning of two (2) completed projects situated at the National Film Institute, Jos. The projects are the Still Photo laboratory Complex and the three-in-one Cyber café/Bookshop/Canteen.

Similarly, the Plateau State Government has also assured that, she will continue to provide the necessary conducive environment that will sustain the development of the state especially in the area of Film, Tourism and Culture.

Governor David Jang, represented by his deputy, Mrs. Pauline Tallen gave this assurance in a speech also delivered at the opening ceremony of SHOOT! 2008 and the commissioning of the two NFI projects.

The Deputy Governor in her speech noted that training and retraining of professionals was a necessary anecdote for the technological growth of the Nation. According to her, this underscores, government’s resolve to partner and assist Institutions and Agencies whose activities compliment the vision and aspirations of the Government and People of Plateau State.

Mr. Odey who declared SHOOT! 2008 open, commended management of the Film Corporation for instituting the SHOOT! Series, which he said will no doubt, guarantee sustainable professional growth within the motion picture industry.

The Honourable Minister described the Cyber Café/Bookshop/Canteen and the Still Photography Laboratory complex as symbols of empowerment, Motivation and Commitment saying that the commissioning represented one of the cardinal missions of President Umaru Yar’duas’ seven point agenda. Mr. Odey, added that no industry can survive the test of time without global competitive edge which the Nigeria motion picture industry has been bracing up for.

In his welcome address, Mr. Afolabi Adesanya, Managing Director of Nigerian Film Corporation, noted that SHOOT! 2008 was designed to offer a rich bouquet of courses to meet the quest of a broad spectrum of participants who had indicated interest to participate in the workshop sessions. He commended the Honourable Minister of Information and Communications for the support and assistance from the Federal Ministry of Information and Communications, and the Plateau State government for the various achievements by the Corporation in the past years.

Adesanya noted that the industry’s professional training needs were being met, through the National Film Institute, and that the Still Photo Laboratory complex and the Cyber cafe/Bookshop/Canteen were indications of the Corporation’s commitment to continuous upgrade of facilities for film production activities and man power development for the sector.

Embassies of China, France, and Spain, CEDAR/JVC, the media, Private Production firms and notable film professionals also received kudos from the Nigerian Film Corporation boss for their assistance, partnership, support and cooperation.

SHOOT! is an annual professional training workshop organized by the Nigerian Film Corporation to provide a veritable platform for the training and retraining of film professionals.

Since 2005, Six Hundred and Forty Eight (648) participants have benefited from the annual training programme. The SHOOT! 2008 workshop sessions have broken new grounds as a platform for Nigerian motion picture professionals to gain world class expertise, exchange ideas, engage in lively discussions, and discover and learn practical skills, all intended to keep the business of movie making, a creative economy on a forward track.

SHOOT! 2008, with the theme: MUSIC FOR FILM: ENHANCING THE VISUAL IMAGE” runs from 21st-24th July 2008 at the National Film Institute Jos. International film professionals namely; Barbel Mauch from Germany, Dominique Giral from France, Alric Wilson, Penny Tweedie, Sylvie Bringas and Stephen Bayly, all from the UK and the CEDAR/JVC crew led by Alfred Okoro are facilitating the four day training workshop in Still Photography, Cinematography, Documentary, Production, Directing for the Screen, Music for film, Animation, Sound and Digital Editing.
